36 M Ultra Marathon

Keith Whyte Ultra Marathon

This is a 9 mile route, looped for 36 miles

The Ultra course will start and finish in the picturesque fishing village of Courtmacsherry, West Cork. Courtmacsherry and its surroundings are steeped in history so do set aside some time to stroll around the beautiful seaside village. The 36 mile course is a fast and relatively flat looped course around Courtmacsherry bay where the sea is always by your side. It leaves Courtmacsherry travelling through Timoleague village, Harbour view ,Kilbrittain up to the end of the causeway east of Coolmain beach. Here it turns around and returns to Courtmacsherry village with the sea on your left side. This loop is then repeated to complete the 36 M Ultra distance.

The first miles are flat leading in to Timoleague and and Harbour view. Between mile 8 and 9 there is the first hill leading up passing The Pink Elephant Bar & Restaurant. This elevation is the highest at approx. 90 ft . From here continue straight and decline to the end of the causeway with Coolmaine beach on your right side to turn around the marker and loop back with now Coolmaine beach on your left side climbing back up the hill to The Pink Elephant and decend back down to pass through Harbour view, Timoleague and back to Courtmacsherry village . As you pass Timoleague on the way back look to your left and visualize the poor, beautiful 59 ft Fin Whale that got stranded here in 2009. Its remain are now on view in nearby Kilbrittain. For the final 3 mile stretch back to Courtmacsherry village you will notice the sea is on your left and this unique estuary that supports more life that the Amazon forest soil. Look out for amazing wildlife to the left and to the right.

Once you enter the village and pass the church on your right keep an eye out for the Lifeboat house & rescue centre and the lifeboat out at sea which has saved many lives over the last 70 years in Courtmacsherry and its surroundings.

From here, it’s the final kick to finish line.
